Why is Devon writing The Green Notebook?

Two reasons. Mostly. I have a blog--The Yellow Notebook--but have noticed that blogs with specific goals seem to shine. So I decided that I would blog about the next two-and-a-half years as we work REALLY hard at squeezing my husband through nursing school while randomly making money, consistently saving ourselves money, raising small children, writing a novel, dealing with the current economy, trusting God and deepening our friendships, et al. Watch the balancing act! Also, my friends have been complaining that blogs tend to be, well... life edited. So I am going to try NOT to edit out the things that make us a real family with real financial and other struggles. And in this ring...

By the way, I have not named my children "Boy" and "Girl." I just like to refer to them that way on the blog. I also refer to my nephew as "Baby."

And here is my tagline:
What economy? Or Diary of a Young, Urbanite, Apolitical, Lower-Income, Middle-Class, Writer, Foodie, Artist, Stay-at-Home Mom.

*If you want to know our story and the protracted story of this blog, see the entry from January 17, 2010, titled appropriately "Our Story."

Yet Another Low-Budg Holiday

I think for awhile I was sick of doing the holiday thing with all the busyness and the lack of funding. However, the whole New Year's Resolution to keep up on birthdays and holidays has led to an unexpected new zeal for the holidays, which is something most of us start out with, right? Anyhow, I have started to list the holidays as well as the birthdays I need to keep up on, and have also started taking notes on our holiday traditions. (I have a terrible memory.) Then I jumped the gun just a little on Harvest Time (which is what I call it since Halloween isn't until late October but I love to get into apples and pumpkins and pretty leaves long before that). I made a trip with a few coupons to JoAnns (when I shouldn't have, but it's done now) for some autumny colors in contemporary floral patterns. The result is a couple weeks later the house is teeming with fall festivity, and if I can just just relax enough to allow myself to lay back on the couch in the window full of rainy skies, I smile at the little things around me.
My favorite; fabric pennants streamers with orange lighting, edging the front porch.

The paper streamers of bats and leaves, draped all over the family room.

 More of the same.
Cheap mums are a great way to cheer up the front yard for the fall.

The holiday flag with colorful leaves. Hopefully this will last a couple years, but with the sun and the rain...
I have yet to perfect flag-making that lasts outdoors.
